They Blew Her Up transfers to Internazionale a Ferrara with support from Evens Foundation

The play exploring the murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia will be staged on 1 October

Play about the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, They Blew Her Up, comes to Internazionale a Ferrara

They Blew Her Up tells the story of Caruana Galizia's brutal murder by a car bomb through the point of view of different protagonists related to the event.

Caruana Galizia worked as a journalist in Malta for more than 30 years. She had her own blog, through which she published the results of her investigative journalism. She was killed on 16 October 2017.

Caruana Galizia had received many threats over the years due to her work. Her house was set on fire, and her family's dogs were killed. She was also frequently subjected to legal threats in an attempt to silence her.

Since her death, she has become an international figurehead for independent investigative journalism. Her case has also led to proposed changes in EU law. The play, They Blew Her Up, was written, directed and produced by Herman Grech, a fellow journalist and editor-in-chief of the Times of Malta.

"Since Daphne's murder, we've seen journalists killed in the Netherlands, Slovakia, Greece, Ukraine, Turkey, Palestine… you name it. So the story resonates in many countries," said Grech in an interview for the Evens Foundation. "We still see journalists being killed for doing their jobs, and some of them are the victims of state-sponsored assassinations. Though the subject in the play focuses on a crime in the EU's smallest state, it is a universal problem, and it's also happening in the heart of Europe."

The play was staged earlier this year in Brussels as part of Difference Day, the annual event dedicated to freedom of speech and a free press, which the Evens Foundation also supports.

The Foundation has now helped the play transfer to Internazionale a Ferrara, one of Europe's largest gatherings of journalists.
