About the scroll documentary

The Changing Democracies scroll documentary explores some of the hidden narratives of Europe’s democratic transitions and the moments of struggle, uncertainty, disappointment and hope that defined them. Featuring first-hand testimonies of individuals who lived under different political systems, the film challenges us to reflect on what democracy demands and whether we are still willing to fight for it.

The documentary aims to encapsulate the learnings of the Changing Democracies project, which gathered 31 testimonials from more than 10 countries across Europe. The project explores the realities of democratic change through these personal stories—what it takes to move from dictatorship to democracy, what is lost along the way, and what people risk to make it happen. Can these stories help us better understand the crises facing democracy today?
